Review of Pompeii (2014) by Amos C — 25 May 2014
Paul W.S. Anderson's attempt in disaster, history, and romance..ALL IN ONE. I have to say this is probably his best film since Mortal Kombat. I'm not saying this was good neither. First of all, did they ever learn from The Legend of Hercules that they should never PG-13 a Gladiator movie? What's up with Kiefer Sutherland's Roman accent? I wasn't really attached to most of the characters.
If anything, Jon Snow's battle buddy was the only character I cared about. He was a brute, he was honorable and stuff. Jon Snow was cool too, except he didn't really do much whenever he's not wielding a sword.
Speaking of swords, the fight scenes were so choppy. The camera couldn't stay in one shot for at least five seconds. At a few points in the film, it would change angles after every single move the fighters make.
Atleast wasn't cheap and lame looking like Legend of Hercules. There also was not enough romance to make me care. The first 10 minutes from Up had more romance and emotion than this. The visual effects were awesome, but the volcanic eruption was actually where I started to tune out.
This is basically a "warmer", not-so-good version of Titanic mixed with Gladiator.
