Review of Poltergeist III (1988) by Justin A — 20 May 2015
The good news is it at least tries something different from part 2, so it's a bit refreshing. The bad news is what they do isn't very good. It's not scary at all at this point and the special effects have gotten really bad. The script is ridiculous, as like 90% of the "scares" in this movie are Heather O'Rourke turning to the camera with "scary" makeup on and making faces. It happened so many times that it could probably be a drinking game.
There is a really cool moment in the middle of the movie where someone comes out of someone else's dead body. That was interesting.
None of the characters are likable, and while Heather O'Rourke was cute at one point, she is unfortunately getting a bit too old to be acting the way she is portrayed. Nancy Allen's character is a horrible person and not someone you really want to see make it through.
Also, I found it funny that the movie ended and wrapped up and no one seemed to remember that THE YOUNG GUY IS STILL TRAPPED IN ANOTHER DIMENSION! YOU NEVER SAVED HIM! Oh, we're gonna just forget him? Okay.
This is a hard sale. Most who liked Poltergeist 2 won't like this because it's too different, and those who disliked Poltergeist 2 won't like this because it's still not very good. So there's really no one to recommend this too, but I at least feel it is somewhat as good as Poltergeist 2 because it's at least different and it held my attention throughout (whereas Poltergeist 2 had plenty of lulls). Definitely wouldn't recommend this movie though.
