Review of Pollock (2000) by Brad W — 01 Nov 2007
Ed Harris is one of my all-time favourite actors, from the 'Right Stuff' to 'The Abyss', he has given commanding performances (he totally outacted Nicolas cage & Sean Connery in 'The Rock')!
Here, he takes a directing role which got him an Oscar nomination & his co star Marcia Gay Harden a well deserved Oscar.
I love Jackson Pollock's work, not because of the film, but studying him at Art school. Ed Harris' portrayl of the genius abstract expressionist is awesome!! I do think, for a time at least he actually became Pollock. Having studied his method of painting to years of research, it is an amazing film biography of a truly wonderful, yet flawed man. Marcia Gay Harden acts up a storm as Pollock's wife Lee Krasner, and captures her devotion and loyalty through thick and thin. I imagine that Ed Harris may not be the easiest person to work for (view the commentary to hear him bitch about the extras & make Marcia Gay Harden cry to complete a scene).
This film is Ed Harris' labour of love, it shows and is all the better for it.
Go buy this movie if you are a keen art lover, then go to an Art gallery and see his work.
