Review of Pollock (2000) by Maren H — 10 Dec 2007
I haven't seen Gladiator yet, but I can't possibly believe that Crowe deserved the Oscar more than Harris. He's obviously studied footage of Pollock working--he's got the movements, posture, and expressions perfect.
The movie doesn't have a very smooth narrative flow (it's done in artsy-fartsy vignettes for the most part), and I'm not 100% sure how much sense the movie would make to someone who goes in not knowing much about Pollack's life.
Also, there are a few points that seem like "artist out of control" cliches (like the obligatory flipping over the table in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner). Still, a very good movie.
