Review of Pollock (2000) by Cory B — 04 Sep 2010
I like movies that take their time, but they have to go somewhere. This one's just slow-moving with no direction. The cast is brilliant; Ed Harris is wonderful, and Marcia Gay Harden steals the show.
There are moments of excitement, such as when Pollock paints a mural for Guggenheim and the score swells over each paint stroke. There are other scenes of depth and emotion and the cast rises to the occasion, but the direction goes nowhere.
Is it too much to ask for a movie worthy of Pollock's genius? Maybe a little style, something that matches Pollock's depth. It seems like an accurate portrayal, but a biopic can be accurate and exciting (see: Milk).
