Review of Police Academy (1984) by Little L — 14 Dec 2008
When you think of 80's comedies, this movie should be on your list.
Unlike the watered-down sequels, this is an R-rated romp that first introduced us to Mahony and the gang of misfits as they go through 14 weeks of police academy training.
Surprisingly, this has aged rather well and a lot of the jokes still work today. It's completely silly, but it's better than most of the sequels combined. Plus it gets a lot of its mirth from the performance of G.W. Bailey as the hard-assed instructor.
There's been tons of similar made since (and even before, such as 1980's Up The Academy) but this holds a place in my heart as one of my favourite comedies when growing up - along with Revenge of the Nerds, Better Off Dead, and Porky's.
