Review of Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! (2017) by Matt S — 05 Nov 2017
'I Choose You!' revitalises the series with an original take on the classic story. But this is not the Kanto you thought you knew. 20 years of Pokémon is encompassed with Ash's quest to seek Ho-Oh, but of course it is not quite that simple. The narrative has it's elements of darkness and manages to shift tone very successfully.
The main characters are developed well and suit the general prèmise. However, as usual Team Rocket only add comic relief and nostalga to the story which unforunatly makes them superfluous.
In terms of the score some may not be pleased that the original has been almost entirely replaced. Ed Goldfarb does, however, fabulously create a great sense of atmosphere and the original Pokémon theme is probably the best iteration since Paige's original.
Overall, this films target is clearly the fan base but can still be entertaining to newcomers.
