Review of Pokémon the Movie 2000 (1999) by Chris B — 15 Jan 2011

As the second film in the critically-reviled Pokemon series of anime films, Pokemon: The Power of One is still seriously flawed, with many of the same gaffes that ruined Mewtwo Strikes Back. However, in several areas it's a definite improvement and a pleasent surprise after a miserable start.

The story is about on par with Mewtwo Strikes Back, and we're still unfortunately stuck with the same piss-poor dub crew and characters. Even the new characters are dissapointing, particularly a bored-sounding Beast of the Sea.

Thankfully, one of the most dissapointing elements of Mewtwo Strikes Back, the action, is significantly improved, with several particularly fun chase sequences. However, the film is quite slow in the beginning, and only manages to pick up 2/3ds of the way through, a complaint easily levied against the first three films. The musical score is quite good for the majority of the film, fitting the sweeping glories of it's sweeping flight sequences. The animation is less choppy than Mewtwo Strikes Back, but it still fails to impress.

I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone except for those already acquainted with Pokemon. It's a fine diversion for those already-converted souls.
