Review of Pokémon the Movie 2000 (1999) by Harry W — 15 Oct 2013

Pokemon: The Movie 2000 is clearly not a film that has the power to appeal to non-fans of the Pokemon anime based on the widespread critical derision it has received, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Small elements of Pokemon: The Movie 2000 were poor such as the voice dubbing of Lugia wasn't convincing and seemed really poor, and some of the scriptwriting lines seemed poor, particularly the moment where Misty proclaims " Ash will never be alone, because he's got...me". This is a poorly written and delivered line which is memorable for how poor quality it is. Also there are cliche premise flaws but that was expected.

Aside from that, Pokemon: The Movie 2000 has all the excellent animation and various Pokemon figures which made the series and games a hit in the first place. The colour of the animation is still rich with wide appeal and the musical score is strong which makes Pokemon: The Movie 2000 strongly atmospheric in term of reaching the action heavy scale of its story and the intense venture that its characters go through on the journey. The increase in action is also thoroughly appealing to me, particularly because it's on an apocalyptic scale this time.

For a fan of Pokemon growing up, Pokemon: The Movie 2000 is a very nostalgic thing for me to see and it's a film I still enjoy which surprised me. It's moments of humour still work and it was at a time period before the Pokemon series largely decreased in quality since this film still has the same voice actors and the good characters of the series.

Pokemon: The Movie 2000 is a great film for Pokemon fans, which is what it tries to be and nothing more.
