Review of Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) by Greenisgood — 14 Jul 2019
Glad to say this movie was better than I expected. I am also in complete awe of the movie for having the balls to hold itself back from mentioning anything about Ash or any information from the early days of Pokemon just to evoke nostalgia.
The story was genuinely interesting and I am happy to say everything I thought it was gonna cheese through actually did not by being refreshing, funny and above average VFX.
Ryan Reynolds seems like he can do no wrong anymore, doesn't it... I bet his choice in scripts have greatly improved after Green lantern almost ended up killing his career. He was the best part of the movie since a quippy Ryan Reynolds and a Yellow Mouse that shoots Electricity is not something that should traditionally work. I tip my hat to you Mr. Reynolds for pulling it off.
The lead was tolerable, but only because Justice Smith in Jurassic Park left a very bad after taste for me... So I was glad he was not as cringe-worthy. The villain's were adequate for the kind of story the movie was telling.
All of the Pokemon action was not Top Class.. But everything was above average enough and used sparingly that it did not overtly attempt action scenes just because.
All in all a good watch.
