Review of Point Break (2015) by Tayne E — 22 May 2010
I consider this to be one of the best action flicksâ??s of all time. It was released back in 1992. Had it been released today I believe it would still hold up and excel against others in the genre. Kathryn Bigelow recently made history by becoming the first female director to win an Oscar, and early on in her career she showâ??s us brilliance in her ability to direct a solid action film with Point Break.
The only criticism Iâ??ve ever heard towards this movie is from surfers, but this isnâ??t a surfing movie! I happen to think the surfing sequences are done perfectly. Itâ??s a crime story where a rookie FBI agent (Keanu Reeves) joins a Bank Robbery department with an older veteran agent (Gary Busey). Theyâ??re on the hunt against the elite robbers that have earned themselves a nickname â??The Dead Presidentsâ??. Keanuâ??s character Johnny Utah goes undercover as a surfer because the only small leads they have on the presidentâ??s is that theyâ??re probably surfers.
Reeves is perhaps the most successful actor Iâ??ve seen with the least amount of talent, but this role was meant for him and I have trouble picturing anybody else capturing the character the way he does. Patrick Swayze is at his best in this role. His performance here reminds us how versatile and talented an actor he was. He plays Bodhi who is the charismatic leader of a group of young surfers. Iâ??ve seen most of Swayzeâ??s work and I believe this will go down as one of his best.
Everything works in this movie. The skydiving, surfing, and bank robbing sequences. The pacing, the chemistry between all actors, the romance, and of course the action. Classic! 10/10 from me.
