Review of Point Break (1991) by Jen A — 07 Jul 2010
Kathryn Bigelow's "Point Break" stars Keanu Reeves as a cop who goes undercover as a surfer to bust a gang of bank robbers led by Patrick Swayze. The plot is a bit ridiculous, and the film's devotion to the Southern California surfer dude mentality is a little goofy, but it is still a pretty good action picture.
It helps that it contains some terrific action sequences, including a foot chase and a paradrop that are pure adrenaline (indeed, this film may incite an alarming number of high fives and "aw yeahs" from viewers).
It also helps that Reeves and Swayze are very effective in their roles as men who seemingly use action to express themselves, as an end in itself. Even in this you can see that Bigelow is a very gifted director, and she has revisited this theme of obsession with action in the terrific "The Hurt Locker.
" A little silly, but still a very well crafted action movie.
