Review of Point Break (1991) by Mjs M — 08 Aug 2009
There?s a very well received movie called The Hurt Locker coming out soon and it?s directed by Kathryn Bigelow. I don?t really know Bigelow?s work too well, so I?m trying to cram in her oeuvre so that when I review her new movie I can pretend like I?ve been familiar with her work for years.
I didn?t really have very high expectations going into it as it?s a film which Simon Pegg and Nick Frost made fun of in the same breath as they made fun of Bad Boys II. The film itself was a bit different than that joke would lead me to believe.
Rather than having too much action this doesn?t have enough. The action here lacks a certain scope it needs and isn?t really filmed with any real intensity. Generally I don?t think the world of surfing is a particularly good backdrop for an action flick and the movie lacks the stakes it needed to really make me care.
The villains aren?t very threatening, which some would say is the point, but I don?t think the central theme of friendship really amounts to much. Late in the film the characters start getting really stupid and behave in ways that defy logic.
Not deserving of its cult status.
