Review of Pocket Listing (2016) by Violetmovies554 — 15 Dec 2016
This was a surprisingly enjoyable picture which will likely build a small cult following in the real estate world as a kind of lampoon of that industry. It will also attract the attention of cinephiles who will quickly identify its homages to old-school film noirs like "Double Indemnity," "Body Heat," and yes, even "Chinatown.
" "Pocket Listing" is aware that it is nowhere near as formidable as those titles, but as an avid film goer, it's nice to see a film which has some reference to some of the greats in its psuedo-genre.
I say pseudo-genre because while it has the formula of neo noir (down on his luck main character who is somewhat corrupt finds himself swarmed by even more nefarious characters), the film is ultimately dark comedy in tone and doesn't really take itself too seriously.
Could have used more of Burt Reynolds as his role is pretty small but Rob Lowe plays a decent supporting part as a raspy voiced psychopathic mansion seller, and newcomers Jurdi and Clark are not just eye candy but they also share great chemistry and help drive the film in the right direction by approaching their characters with really dynamic conviction.
The last few minutes of the film are a bit all over the place and could leave some leaving with different interpretations as to what actually transpired, but overall "Pocket Listing" is solid, well-made entertainment.
