Review of Plunkett & Macleane (1999) by Mareen K — 19 Sep 2009
This film has a lot of flaws, sure. There are some very good ideas surrounded by mediocrity. But it has style, humor and some wonderful wonderful shots. I guess you can forget authenticity, I don't think they're going for that anyway.
That makes it possible to really enjoy those awesome costumes and makeup, as well as the sets. Alan Cumming looks absolutely right for his part. One of my favorite scenes is the ball scene with the modern music score.
Somehow the music fits it amazingly well and creates a very cool atmosphere. It's absolutely brilliant. Sure, you could perceive the musical choices to be either horrible or great. I thought they gave the film a unique touch.
That boldness and some great scenes (lighting, composition etc) made me enjoy the movie, and that's also why I rate it relatively well. It is very unfortunate that it doesn't work on the same level throughout.
