Review of Please Give (2010) by Patrick C — 22 May 2010
An absolutely astonishingly well executed film. Almost pitch perfect in every aspect. Nicole Holofcener has written yet another brilliant, original, sharply observed script full of delightful and well drawn characters.
She puts layer upon layer into each role, and the superb cast brings life to them in the most flattering and honest way. Catherine Keener is a revelation, as always, as the woman who seeks to fix herself by fixing others.
She really lives her character, pouring out pain and pleasure at all the right instances. Rebecca Hall portrays the everygirl with a proper balance of hope and non-chalance. Amanda Peet is deliciously unforgiving.
She bravely plays her character as straight up rude. Oliver Platt provides a solid male presence among all the female powerhouses. It is impossible to praise this movie enough. It's so deep you wish you could pause and take notes.
Definitely well worth seeing. Please Give is a gift.
