Review of Please Give (2010) by Patrick F — 19 Jun 2010
Another great movie that will probably be watched by less people than the 7PM Friday showing of Toy Story 3. Sometimes you wonder why people can't get into good movies and would rather watch Dr. House, Glee or any of the 10 million reality TV shows with zero redemption value.
Please Give is yet another NY character study about people that are dysfunctional but in an amazingly normal way. All of them have very human flaws. The kind you would never really bother to take very seriously since for the most part are harmless and silly.
The story primarily revolves around a family that looks pretty normal but all have some issues that really twist them up more than they should. They are also neighbors with an older lady that has two granddaughters, one that is good but lame and another that is not so good and equally lame.
The whole premise of the movie revolves around mundane details, a silly affair and some pretty solid laughs that in real life would not be funny. This is the kind of movie where dialogue is built around how people think but actually say it as opposed to keeping things to themselves.
The whole cast is really good and the characters are so darned real you wonder if you've never met any of them.
Great film for a Sunday night.
