Review of Please Give (2010) by Ben T — 25 Jun 2010
One of the best independent films with an east coast sensitivity that I saw this year. It's very spiritual and guilt ridden like my Catholic upbringing. LOL! It represented so much in the likes of THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, MARGOT AT THE WEDDING, THE WRESTLER and A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE. The film was leisurely paced and contemplative. I really applauded director Nicole Holofcener's use of an economical budget, somewhat personal improvisation acting technique, and cinéma vérité film style throughout. The movie was open ended and non-closured, and to me, that was a saving grace. Loved it the way it was. The ensemble cast has Oscar written all over it for next year's acting categories - diverting everything from teen to the elderly. What a dream cast - bitchy, direct, and raw!
Don't miss it!
