Review of Please Give (2010) by Nick O — 22 Oct 2010
A friggin' gem. This thing incited emotions in me I've rarely felt since first seeing movies that got me hellbent on movies. "Please Give", written and directed by the zeitgeist Nicole Holofcener is a cold reminder of the bitterness stashed beneath even the warmest hearts.
It's an act of superficiality, and because of that it registers aware appreciation while dusting off the unsentimental reality it's permeated inside of. And Holofcener, who rounds up a stunning female-led cast treated with precocious sobriety, tags each scene with a new foundation; it's amazing how well the dark ethics stitch together.
This got a theatrical run in April. I'd style it an early Christmas present.
