With Please Give Nicole Holofcener has crafted both timely and observational dramatic comedy that benefits from its bitterly humane vibe. The movie is light on plot, yet strong on character development.
Every character, while not necessarily likeable, is instantly easy to identify with and complex at the same time. The exquisite acting from virtually every member of the talented cast only strengthens the movie's entirely genuine feel.
There aren't any false notes and Holofcener has a gift of shaping awkwardly funny interactions between people. Her direction feels always focused as well as confident, which is a major asset in the movie so aptly depicting the troubling distinction between affluence and compassion.
This is a valid statement on overpowering consumerism in the contemporary world. 8/10 (B+).
