Review of Please Give (2010) by Maria U — 11 Jan 2011
How can a movie where nothing much happens be so entertaining? That is the magic of Please Give, a slice-of life comedy focusing on the lives of several New Yorkers, Woody Allen style. How pathetic can it be for a 91 year old woman to receive a nightgown for her birthday and say she'll save it for a special occasion? Do teenage girls obsess over skin problems and $200 designer jeans? Yes, we know those people, we understand their desires, their guilt and their problems, and director Nicole Holofcener invites us to peek at their lives with a light breeze of sophisticated humor.
