Review of Please Give (2010) by Bill B — 10 May 2011
This movie left me with something of a conflicted 'message', which may or may not have been the point. The upshot is that the film is about a couple who make their living by purchasing the belongings of the recently deceased and selling them in a chic upscale store. They are left to try to reconcile this fact with their attempts at charity in spite of their vulture-esque business tactics as their daughter wants to live a more affluent lifestyle, which they can easily afford.
They are also basically hovering over their elderly neighbor, whose apartment they own and are essentially waiting for her to die so that they can renovate both apartments into one residence, a plot point that further muddies the waters as to the message of the film.
Are they good people? Bad people? Is anyone?
Worth a rental, as it has some amusing moments, but don't expect a 'hero' to emerge.
