Review of Pleasantville (1998) by Theo M — 01 Jun 2010
A young guy who loves a corny black and white sitcom from the 50s, all of a sudden winds up in it, along with his sister. Especially his sister refuses the adjust to the seemingly perfect and predictable black and white world, and introduces a bit of naughty.
As soon as she and her boyfriend, as well as other couples, do more than just hold hands at Lover's Lane, things get a bit more colorful. Literally. The less boring and predictable these people become, the more colorful their world gets.
Jazz and rock 'n roll are being played, empty books fill up with insubordinate texts, and a tree even catches fire after mom starts to masturbate. All this- of course - much to the dislike of the still boring black and white majority, who wants to see dinner served at 6 no matter what.
For a moment there, things really turn nasty: books get burned, windows get smashed in, colored people are being banned... Still, once the genie is out of the bottle, there's no putting it back in.
Soon, all of Pleasantville is full of colors, and people start to get content with the new situation. Although this movie is a variation on several themes that has been done (better) before, this still is a very amusing movie.
