Review of Pleasantville (1998) by Ethan R — 28 Dec 2008
This movie is very intelligent and artfully filmed. It is full of symbolism expressing the idea that our lives can be more colorful if we expand our view of the world. As a symbolic small town, Pleasantville represents the notion that if we all adopt the same ideals we will be happier.
If we look outside of Pleasantville we will encounter all the undesirable colors that exist in the world. This is considered dangerous and threatening to some of the town's residents. The central theme of this movie is not a debate of good vs bad, but one of acceptance vs.
resistance.
