Review of Pleasantville (1998) by Doris R — 26 Jan 2009
Another instalment of the Sparks Festival 2009 and a very pleasant one, too. In the words of a friend who joined me to view this movie - the compelling message it contains took him quite by surprise. As for me - I knew the reason for this feature being incorporated into the special effects festival - despite there not really being a 'proper' introduction to the film this time - was the fact that while some people and their surroundings turned colourful, the remainder remained black and white.
How it was done? No idea - but it was done well and I agree with my friend that the message - to essentially overcoming fear and stepping up to the plate - was very poignant, indeed. Acting, choreography, writing as well as directing really came together on this one.
