Review of Pleasantville (1998) by Siobhan C — 22 Jun 2011
Very interesting premise; up until today I had only seen the end of the movie multiple times, but now it makes more sense watching from the beginning. The huge prejudice towards the "coloreds" seems reminiscent of the segregation of African Americans, which was occurring during the series' original run; things get almost disturbingly ugly and violent when the rest of the town reacts to the changes happening in their world, deeply contrasting with the happy-go-lucky feel we saw at first. Visually it's great, the black-and-white people on technicolor backgrounds look completely real.
4/5 stars.
