Review of Pleasantville (1998) by Joe H — 04 Jul 2012
A really enjoyable movie on so many levels, "Pleasantville" is great on a technical level, social commentary, and bizarre surrealism. 2 teens from modern times get beamed into a 1950's sitcom by Don Knots just sounds too weird to be taken seriously, and it shouldn't be serious.
It was at the time the movie with the most digital effects ever, with the huge amount of color correction necessary for the black-and-white oppressed 1950s world to change into the free colorized world.
Culturally and socially, sexual oppression and freedom, racism, and the change in morality over a 50 year period in American culture is portrayed metaphorically. It's not a slap in the face, and that's what makes it more fun than anything else.
