Review of Pleasantville (1998) by Kyle S — 24 May 2013
A spectacular visual experience, Pleasantville drops us into a black and white 50's sitcom world where everything is as pleasant and non threatening as possible. Toss two kids from the 90's into that world and you get this movie! Everyone in Pleasantville is happy with their lives, they see each other in black/white/grey but no what colour is.
As Bud/ Mary Sue start to change the established TV history of this show, the world changes, slowly adding colour into the black and white world which makes for something you have never seen done like this.
The more that things change the more colour in the world, all leading to a conflict where things can't possibly remain so Pleasant and linear as they were before. The movie has the perfect amount of camp and comedy as well as a touch on the topic of discrimination (against anyone who appears in colour) and is interesting to watch a era transition on the screen.
