Review of Playing with Dolls: Bloodlust (2016) by Filmgrinder S — 14 Feb 2013
When you spot an island off the coast of what-what you have to ask yourself two things: 1. Are the inhabitants friendly? and 2. What's the worse that can happen just being on an island? Well, a small group of young people on a boat spot an island and decide to come ashore. There they meet an eccentric man named Dr. Albert Balleau who has a fun hobby. He's leader of the island and spends much of his time playing a most dangerous game. Now Taxidermy for some would be limited to shooting animals and stuffing them. Not for Dr. Balleau. He likes his game to be a challenge.
So when humans, like the four who came ashore, show up on his island is when the challenge is met. The four are to be hunted by Dr. Balleau. Hopefully, finding, shooting and stuffing them for his underground museum of human statues. No one can escape the island of Dr. Balleau's wrath! With his trusty bow and arrow gun, he marches around the jungle to cap himself some young meat. Will these older looking kids survive and get off the island?! Or will they become another addition to Dr. Balleau's sadistic trophy cave?
This would be the forth film version to Richard Connell's story 'The Most Dangerous Game'. The word tepid is constantly passed around when this film pops up. It's tepid, I suppose, but certainly more funnier. Wilton Graff who plays Dr. Balleau is less threatening than a bag of skittles. His villianous demeanor and speeches of clever baloney make him more fun to make fun of. As for the film itself, it's not a mess exactly. I would call it a swing and miss type of picture. It takes the same essential material of 'The Most Dangerous Game' and spins a "new" production of it. Not sure if you could call it a success because it's just so damn tepid. Tepid I TELLS YOU!
