The writer-director Michael Nickles has made a mesmerizing chronicle of the hunt for Osama bin Laden, centered on the obsessive drive of a C.I.A. agent codenamed Playback (based on a real person) to find the courier bringing messages to bin Laden's hiding place.
The movie turns into the ultimate procedural, in which one Al Qaeda prisoner after another - and a series of seemingly irrelevant details in old interrogation videos - feeds the workings of Playback's calculations.
Christian Bale, with his sudden smile and distraught look, plays Playback with warmth, and with murder in his heart. The performance is startling at times in it's ferocity. It's a great movie starring Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri.
