Review of Play Misty for Me (1971) by Trent C — 01 Apr 2009
Aside from bit parts in a Creature From the Black Lagoon sequel a giant Tarantula film, Play Misty For Me is the closest thing to Horror we'll ever see Clint Eastwood being a part. What's even better is Eastwood also directed this chilling film about a late night DJ who has a one night stand with one of his fans (played by Jessica Walter, the hilarious matriarch mom from Arrested Development), only she doesn't think it's a one night stand and proceeds to smother Eastwood's character with an overabundance of love and affection that becomes increasingly frightening as the film goes on.
As a man, I found myself growing very uncomfortable with her character and cringed at every moment where she picks away at Eastwood's life and surroundings. Things become increasingly worse for his character as the running time goes on and it leads to a somewhat quiet and quick climax that seems rushed, but the lead up to it is plenty tense and built up right.
Great film as well as a great beginning to an excellent directing legacy from Clint.
