Review of Play Misty for Me (1971) by Gareth M — 30 Sep 2010
Clint Eastwood, in his directional debut, recasts himself from grizzled hero to grizzled victim in a terse and tight thriller that remains impactful to this day. Clint stars as a radio host who recieves a nightly request from a woman who asks him to "play 'Misty' for me". On meeting a hooking up with his mysterious caller, she turns out to be more than a typical fan and proceeds to reign chaos and terror on his life if he doesn't return her love.
Whilst some features look dated - most of the blood looks revealingly like bright red paint - Eastwood shows a steady hand behind the camera early his career as director expertly dragging out the suspense and hammering home the shocks. The script keeps things moving along at a quick pace resulting in a well wrought pay off, leaving Evelyn as one of cinemas most terrifying obsessives.
