Review of Play Misty for Me (1971) by Andrew N — 08 Sep 2007
Not bad. A little ruff around the edges. A few sequences dragged out so long the piece begins looking more like a love song music video or a jazz festival documentary. The psychological layering here also, not quite as richly textured as I like to see.
Those gripes aside however, Mr. Eastwood does remain unwaveringly loyal to what he believes to be the heart of the matter and does very little audience pandering. Add to that the topnotch performance by Ms.
Walter and what results is a number of highly believable, and in that, rather powerful moments. Keeping in mind that not only is Mr. Eastwood making his directorial debut here, he's also playing the lead role and breaking new ground with a first American feature of its kind (at least according to the DVD's bonus features and the best of my knowledge).
Rather impressive.
