An absolute masterpiece from Allen, demonstrating his considerable comic abilities with a blistering central turn that veers from constant, hilarious slapstick humour, to decidedly dark and absurd flights of fantasy and the self-referential genius of the central conceit involving the spirit of Humphrey Bogart - who pops up every now and then to give dubious advice to the hapless-in-love Woody Allen shmuck, is an inspired touch and allows for one of the greatest conclusions in cinema history, i.
