Review of Play It Again, Sam (1972) by Margherita S — 06 Nov 2006
Play It Again, Sam, 1972.
Headliners: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton.
Director: Herbert Ross.
8 out of 10
It would be higher, but it's lacking Allen's directorial genius. But its script is still pure Allen, and Keaton is brilliant as always. It is a bit like Annie Hall. Not nearly as good, but it still dances on the line between reality and nonsense. The title itself is funny, but from this we can denote no camera turns, no classic Allen shots. The ghostly version of Bogart is just the best part of the movie, the extra little dab of sugar that helps it go down easier. But even in this we see some classic Allen trademarks that would appear frequently in his later works.
