Review of Play Dirty (1969) by Max M — 26 Sep 2009
Solid WWII action adventure picture about a small group of ex-cons, led by Michael Caine, sent to blow up Rommel's remaining fuel supplies in North Africa.
Andre De Toth directs with his usual and effective no-nonsense style, ratcheting up the action, suspense, and violence (this movie is extremely violent even by today's standards - and it was released in 1968!) and once again proving that he could excel in any given genre - whether it be film noir (the extraordinary Crime Wave, Pitfall), western (The Day of the Outlaw, Riding Shotgun) melodrama (Monkey On My Back), or horror (the original House of Wax, which was shot in 3-D despite the fact that De Toth had only one eye!).
