Review of Platoon (1986) by Nathaniel M — 17 Feb 2011
Platoon is an interesting Vietnam movie to say the least. Rather than a typical war story that focuses on a coordination of men against the enemy, this film focuses and a lack of chemistry amongst these men that presents intracombative problems.
We learn some of the truths about morals in our armed forces and all of the dirty and deviously illegal acts of our brethren. It represents the epitome of guerrilla warfare and the dilemma between fear, courage, and justice for those done wrong.
Plus, we also get a glimpse of one of Johnny Depp's first roles in filming. However, despite giving us an unusual look at the Vietnam's unsuspected conflict, the movie could have done better with the relationships between the men.
I noticed indifference and a lack of care when there shouldn't have been, and a best of friends when I believed there wasn't enough time for it. Both extremes cause a disproportionate balance of emotions and make the inner conflict of this squad near Cambodia a tad unbelievable.
However, I'd still recommend seeing this movie for what it has to uniquely offer. 8/10.
