Review of Platoon (1986) by Innokenty L — 17 Dec 2013
Oliver Stone's masterpiece about an American Army Platoon and their Vietnam war experience, it is a spectacular film. The movie stars Charlie Sheen as a new recruit arriving at his unit in Vietnam.
Unlike most other war movies Platoon shows the tension amongst soldiers forced to live, fight, eat, shit, and die together and the melting pot that ensues. As time passes the Platoon is split between two NCOs sgt.
Elias and sgt Barnes. Barnes representing the dark side to the military willing to stoop to killing children if it accomplishes his mission while sgt Elias represents conscience and doing what is right even when everything is going to hell around him.
The movie has some brutal scenes that depict war in a less than heroic fashion a nice change of pace from most other American war movies. The acting is for the most part excellent Williem DeFoe, Tom Berenger, and Charlie Sheen are all on target as are most of the supporting actors.
A movie everyone should watch if they want to see a fairly accurae portrait of the Vietnam war from an American grunts point of view.
