Review of Platoon (1986) by Matt W — 08 Jan 2014
Why I chose to watch this as one of my Christmas films this year... I do not know.
Platoon is a haunting, upsetting and powerful piece. Oliver Stone makes a film which is driven by it's message at it's heart. The message being that war, let's face it, is not good. It does romanticize war like some films do, and it does not get patriotic about America at the end.
People die for no reason, and then guns are shot, and the main question that the film brings up is: What is the point?
The acting is great with the best performance of Charlie Sheen's I've ever seen. Willem Defoe is great, and it's nice to see Forrest Whitaker playing a smaller role also.
The visuals are gorgeous, and there is lot to be picked apart and analysed. It's a classic, and a must-watch.
