While it does not feature Charlie Sheen at his best, and the war is not just realized, but dramatized, but the grit and horror of the Vietnam War are well realized in the Oliver Stone's Vietnam experience brought to film in the 1986 Best Picture winner.

Stone masters his ability to create evil, despicable characters that are impossible not only to relate to, but impossible not to despise. This The action is meaningful, but not to a point of many late twentieth century action flicks where it becomes utterly unrealistic and dumb.

This movie confirms my belief that in deep war, the air would be litter with obscenities and cries of anguish. Few films capture the level of despair in the free-for-all environment of war. This is not to say that there are not enough movies about war; countless movies have unrightfully been set it the overused but much loved setting.

A moving and influential film and greatly made, Platoon is a classic, and will be for some time.
