Review of Platoon (1986) by Julio V — 28 Mar 2011
This is film-making by numbers, essentially little more than regurgitating the somewhat tires cliches of the moral vicissitudes embodied by the 'Vietnam brand'. Although the horrors of war were captured to some extent it was never in a manner that could have been deemed either interesting or subtle.
The cast, much like the script, is dependable and predictable without ever straying into the realms of the exceptional. Ultimately there isn't really any room for this kind of mediocrity in a genre that includes true masterpieces like Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and (although of course not a Vietnam War movie) The Killing Fields.
