Review of Planet Terror (2007) by Bob L — 06 Sep 2011
The partnership of Tarantino and Rodriguez for this Grindhouse double bill (Death Proof being the other) was a cool idea as a homage to that sleazy, gory, exploitative pocket of 70's kitsch (as most films in that time were double bills) but the main backfire seems to be that when seen together, it appears more of a competition between the two over which is the better film- and I'm afraid Rodriguez comes out on top.
There's buckets of humorous gross out action, as opposed to Quentins chat, more cameos, and actually more storytelling. Everything is taken to extremes, to the point where, as hard as they try, it's hard to accept this was a cheap schlock movie.
The only thing that doesn't quite fit in this Grindhouse project is the trailers by Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie etc. It's like they're trying too hard for the cheese.
