Review of Planet 51 (2009) by Bill C — 12 Sep 2010
Definitely worth a watch for the beautiful CGI world and good work in creating the alien characters that inhabit it. But the one dimensional story is lost in the beautifully visualized 1950's world.
Stanislavski had a system (or "method") to insure that the actors were not some bland amalgam of a character, and that the characters had multiple facets that make them believable entities. The most well developed character in the movie is Rover the autonomous 6 wheeled exploration vehicle who does not have a single line in the movie.
He is conflicted between his obsessions with collecting the perfect rock sample and his mission to help Chuck. There is some adult humor that really is pretty much the standard fare for any of the high budget animated films, but nothing most children over the age of three have bot seen in every other movie.
Same week my boys 4 & 5 and I watched Up (2009), Ponyo (2009), Night at the Museum (2009) and Planet 51 (2009). Ponyo and Up generated allot of positive conversations, where Planet 51 and Night at the museum were not very stimulating.
