Review of Planet 51 (2009) by Cameron J — 13 Apr 2011
Oh, I get it. The planet is an exaggeration of 1951, hence the name "Planet 51". Or, more likely, it's named after Area 51. Or, most likely, 51 is the average IQ of everyone involved in the making of this film.
No, it's not that bad, I was jut waiting forever to hate this film so I could bust out that joke. Seriously though, remarkable animation is matched by lack of originality, cheesiness, cliches, predictability and bad voice acting from some smaller cast members and the Rock.
Sorry Dwayne, but you haven't quite earned the right to drop that title. As for the humor, we've not much more than a compilation of predominantly poorly written, if not immature jokes when the writers can't think of any references that are esoteric to children and unfunny to most of the older viewers that would most likely understand it.
Really, the film certainly has more flaws than pros, but really has little to make it dislikeable, much less despicable. Still, "Planet 51" holds near everything wrong with the modern family film and is not far from total mediocrity, leaving its negative reception to be perfectly understandable.
