Review of Planet 51 (2009) by Phil P — 29 Dec 2012
"Am I a zombie now?.".
I liked the idea of this film and the 50s setting. Reversing the alien on earth to a human on an alien planet. I thought even if it wasn't great and the plot was simple I'd enjoy it because of the premise. *Buzzzz* I was pretty wrong.
It has a basic plot nothing more than what I explained above. A human lands on a planet but he gets separated from his shuttle and he ends up getting help from a skeptical kid called 'Lem'. It plays out pretty typically which I wouldn't have a problem with if it wasn't paced so erratically. The characters personalities are all over the place. They accept anything that's explained its like they're telling each other rather than talking, Discussing.
The setting is as I've said an interesting one but its limited and not fully realised. I get that there has to be difference its a different planet, they're aliens but if the style doesn't fit don't do it. That being said the movie aspect and cloths are a nice touch - especially the movie posters it really captures the feel.
'Planet 51' is relatively devoid of humour and is full of stupid characters that believe anything they're told, odd choices. The setting is confused and its unevenly paced. But it's not a complete failure - its just close.
