Review of Planet 51 (2009) by Tom R — 26 Jul 2010
The only charming or relatively funny thing about Planet 51 is that the alien dogs take the appearance of the Alien franchise's xenomorph. Everything else is lame and generic, even by bad kid's movie standards.
You would think by now that the screenwriters of animated movies would cease making pop culture references after the Shrek series has done them to death, but it doesn't stop Planet 51. Other than the fact that you will not laugh once, the main problem with the film is that there's no imagination with it.
.. the aliens are too human. Also count that both species speak English and there's another planet within space travel distance with an atmosphere. Also, this was supposed to take place in the 1950's era of the alien planet's culture, but they did a horrible job of showing that.
Clearly, I'm overanalyzing a bad kid's movie, but it's the only way I'll be engaged with this movie. SPOILER ALERT... my only hope for this film lies in its ending where the xenomorph sneaks aboard the astronaut's ship.
I imagine it will wreak bloody havoc with a facehugger.
