Review of Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) by Oliver G — 19 May 2011
A better movie than I remember first time I saw it. Good balance of comedy and sentimentality (less sappy than I remembered) that's handled well overall. Some language problems (including the infamous car rental scene).
Other than that, perfect casting for Martin and Candy, and a good transition for John Hughes into adult comedies. Classic comedy of unpredicable (and sometimes uncomfortable) situations, with some surprisingly serious and emotional depth, involving ordinary people in real situation (a trademark of Hughes).
Great soundtrack moments as well. The famous bed scene ALWAYS makes me laugh. ("Those aren't pillows!").
