Review of Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) by Allan P — 14 Dec 2013
A perfect comedy. Many comedies throw dumb gag after dumb gag at the audience but this one takes it's time and invests so much into each carefully crafted gag that they really work evoking huge belly laughs as opposed to the odd smile.
On top of that we get two polar opposite characters that work perfectly together as a comedy duo. Steve Martin puts in his best work as the straight guy and John Candy plays the loveable oaf, not in a silly over the top way but in a much more real way, like this guy could actually exist and you probably know someone like that.
These two actors brilliantly make you feel invested and make you care about what happens to them which brings a whole other dimension to this movie full of heart and emotion, especially towards the end.
it's a perfect comedy that's more than just a comedy.
