Review of Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) by Jon C — 21 Nov 2015
This is another one of John Hughes' most honest and sincere and funny films.
It just didn't work the whole way for me.
Still Steve Martin and John Candy are the perfect odd couple to be stuck in awful scenarios trying to celebrate the holidays.
Once they meet things seem ok, it's just alone they face a few more problems than one should have.
The movie truly gets the heart is where the strength is because both Neal and Del have different views on how the world should work and how people should communicate to one another; one is the big picture giving everyone what they expect and the other is one who just wants things done a certain way to be satisfied.
The whole road trip lasts the entire film which can get cozy or dragging depending if you want to see more shenanigans.
For me it's one of the weaker films from the late director but I cant completely fault him for the hard-earned soft moments and goofy gimmicks of trying to get home.
