Review of Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014) by Jarrett G — 07 Mar 2015
I really thought that the Planes team, Gannaway and Howard, would have learned their lesson about plagiarising Disney's own material the last time round. Although the first Planes feature was a somewhat enjoyable family film, it heavily borrowed its plot-points from Cars. I firmly believe that Planes could have been so much more of a success if we didn't all find the story a little too familiar. This sequel, which takes Dusty into the realm of aerial firefighting, held such promise of providing an original, fresh concept. Unfortunately, copycat format has persisted, and I find that most disappointing coming from Disney; a company that in no way needs to rely upon such shortcuts in order to profit at the box office.
Dusty meets another inspirational role-model, Blade Ranger, as he gets acquainted with life at Piston Peak, an aerial firefighting base. Dusty discovers Blade Ranger's secret past and aims to discover what led the chopper to a more secluded life. Ring any bells?
Visually, the movie is quite impressive. It's definitely a shame that more time and attention wasn't given to the story. As an afternoon diversion for the kids it may be fine, but be warned that the shine on this film does not reach beyond the surface.
